The AIM Approach to Imaging Management

Diagnostic imaging presents a complex and multi-faceted issue for health plans. The AIM approach to imaging management provides the tools to create the solutions needed by health plans to succeed in this environment. AIM approaches imaging utilization in three distinct areas -- all of which can be positively addressed through AIM’s services and technology platform. These processes include: Order Entry, Order Fulfillment, and Transaction Validation. An overview of these components is shown below:

Three Dimensions of Diagnostic Imaging
Order Entry
Order Fulfillment
Transaction Validation

Order Entry
Order Entry solutions ensure the right test is ordered at the right time. AIM’s Order Entry programs review outpatient advanced imaging orders against accepted clinical guidelines. AIM’s Order Entry programs achieve several complementary outcomes:
  • Improve the appropriateness of outpatient advanced imaging ordering through the application of evidence-based clinical guidelines in order to achieve improved patient care and utilization
  • Obtain physician buy-in and satisfaction through clinical excellence, transparency, efficient service and ease of use
  • Deliver value to health plan clients through a tangible return on investment and the provision of relevant and actionable information

AIM’s innovative technologies, Imasis® and ProviderPortal®, drive the Order Entry process. When combined with AIM’s Diagnostic Imaging Clinical Practice Guidelines and proprietary clinical scripting algorithms, these technology solutions are unmatched in their ability to efficiently manage diagnostic imaging utilization and improve the appropriateness of advanced imaging ordering patterns.

Order Fulfillment
Order Fulfillment solutions determine the optimal location for the imaging service. OptiNet®, is a proprietary AIM program designed to provide health plans with comprehensive overviews of their imaging networks, as well as the ability to use this information to support transparency initiatives. OptiNet®, utilizes an easy web tool to facilitate provider registration of equipment, services and staffing. Using its proprietary evaluation criteria, AIM uses this information to generate provider value scoring, which allows ordering physicians and members to determine the best place to receive imaging services.

Transaction Validation
Transaction Validation solutions guarantee proper payment for the service. AIM’s Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) adapts industry recognized coding guidelines and standards to diagnostic imaging services. These guidelines are then used to determine the accuracy of claims payments based on the information found in the radiology report, and to develop new ways to enhance the claims system and ensure proper billing with additional coding edits.

Incorporating these three dimensions of diagnostic imaging allows AIM to offer a total imaging management solution with the following characteristics:

  • Data Driven: Solutions are driven by market-specific data analyses that have the sophistication to provide the key metrics needed to accurately determine the unique needs of individual markets.
  • Flexible: Robust solutions offer a solid central foundation for a radiology management program, and are flexible enough to be adapted to different market environments.
  • Efficient: Products and services perform transactions in an efficient manner in order to reduce provider dissatisfaction and improve overall program results.
  • Results Oriented: Provide health plans with key outcomes including: enhanced quality of services provided, more favorable unit cost position and more accurate payment. Outcomes are achieved in a manner that will produce acceptable ROI and are designed to be in alignment with other corporate initiatives.
